The Senior Department at East Gippsland Specialist School consists of students sixteen years and over.
The focus of the learning curriculum is preparing students for life beyond EGSS. Senior students currently undertake extensive post-school training in a program called Work Stations. In 2015, the program is run every Wednesday. When participating in work stations, the students are considered as “employees” whilst at school and spend the whole day in one of the four Stations: Trade & Industry, Hospitality, Office Administration and Recreation & Leisure.
In addition to the Work Stations, senior students participate in Work Readiness lessons which focus on such skills as resume’ writing, phone etiquette and interview techniques.
Many senior students are enrolled for VCAL as part of transitioning from school to the world of work and living in the community.
The Senior Department also participates in a sports program on Friday afternoons based at the nearby Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre. The group has the use of the Centre’s many facilities including swimming lessons, recreational swimming, volleyball, boxercise, sports dance and fitness circuits in the gymnasium.
All senior students are expected to display behaviours consistent with the expectations stated on the School Wide Positive Behaviour matrix: Being Safe, Being Respectful and Being a Learner. These values are actively taught within senior classrooms across all subject areas.
The Senior Department also encourages and promotes leadership with elections for School Captains being held early each year. The male and female School Captains represent the school at official functions such as the ANZAC Day Commemoration ceremonies and other official community based events.
